Jodhpur Jodhpur Location
The city of Jodhpur is one of the most important cities and travel destinations in the desert state of Rajasthan, India. The second largest city of Rajasthan, India, Jodhpur is easily accessible by road and rail from the cities like Jaipur, Udaipur, Ajmer and New Delhi. The city of Jodhpur is located at the edge of the Thar Desert with Bikaner on its north, Barmar, Pali and Jalor on its south, Jaisalmer on its west, and Nagaur on the its east.

Jodhpur History
Popularly known as the blue city of India, the city of Jodhpur was founded in the year of 1459 by Rao Jodha Ji, Rajput chief associated with the Rathore clan. Erstwhile known as Marwar, the city of Jodhpur is the major trading link among Rajasthan, Gujarat and Delhi. During the British rule, the state of Jodhpur was the largest in Rajputana and Jodhpur prospered. The Marwaris became some of the most known people in this territory. In 1947, when India got its independence, the state merged into the union of India and Jodhpur became the second city of Rajasthan.

The sun city of Jodhpur has a number of thought-provoking tourist attractions. The most predominant attraction of Jodhpur city is the mammoth Mehrangarh Fort. Other attractions include Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jaswant Thada, Mander Garden, Giridkot and Sardar Maket and Balsamand Lake and Garden.

Mehrangarh Fort:
The Mehrangarh Fort is a living testimony of the military might of the Rajputs. Situated on a 125 m high hill, the 5 km long Mehrangarh Fort is one of the most predominant tourist attraction of Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India. The fort is rich with its several elegant palaces which never fail to enchant its visitors. Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace), Janki Mahal, Royal Darbar Takht, Rang Mahal (Color Palace), Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace), Phool Mahal (Flower Palace), Chandan Mahal and many more are some major attractions of this mammoth Mehrangarh Fort. There is a also a rich museum inside this fort complex. 

Umaid Bhawan Palace : Located at the top of a hill, Umaid Bhawan Palace was the only palace which was built in the Jodhpur20th century. The palace is another important landmark of Jodhpur city and has been converted into a grand palace hotel. The Umaid Bhawan Palace was constructed to give employment for 3000 famine stricken population of Jodhpur. Now a grand palace hotel, the Umaid Bhawan Palace also houses a museum.

Jaswant Thada: The 19th century royal cenotaph, Jaswant Thada is a shrine which was built in the memory of Maharaja Jaswant II in the year of 1899. Built in white marble this stunning cenotaph is located north of mammoth Mehrangarh Fort. The grand Jaswant Thada is enriched & impressive with its breathtaking gardens.

Balsamand Lake and Palace: At distance of just 7 km from the main city, the breathtaking Balsamand Lake, Garden and Palace are situated. Balsamand Lake is an artificial lake with garden. It was built in the year of 1159 AD. Balsamand Lake & Garden is an ideal place for enjoying picnics. On the bank of Balsamand Lake, you will also visit the magnificent Balsamand Palace - once a royal summer palace.

Government Museum : Enriched with a rich collection of armory, textiles, local crafts, miniatures and images of Jain Tirthankaras, the Government Museum is located in the breathtakingly beautiful Umaid Garden.
